The library contains collections of historical works which relate in
great detail to the Arab Gulf, in both Arabic and European languages.
The collection of Portuguese books, in particular, is a vital tool for
any research worker wishing to understand the history of the Gulf from
the beginning of the 16th century. The period of British domination in
the Gulf is also well catered for in a comprehensive collection of
material from official British sources.
The other main component under this heading is the Archive section
itself. From the computer terminal here the researcher has instant
access to about one and half million pages of primary source material
from European origins. All of the material is indexed and searchable,
and pages of interest can be selected for printing. The computer
terminal also provide a facility that enables easy access to online
image of the maps on display in the main map hall, as well full
captions.
